The resort celebrated its 80th anniversary in June 2004 and was when it was opened on 7 June 1924 it was described as ‘a Riviera in the Highlands’ and ‘the eighth wonder of the world’. The former Caledonian Railway Company, with its own railway station, built the resort.

The hotel, often called, the ‘Palace in the Glens’, lies at the heart of Scotland, but the resort is only a one-hour motorway drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Playing over the immaculate greens and fairways provides unrivalled views of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The courses were the inspiration of two of the world’s most famous golfers, James Braid, five times winner of The Open, who designed the King’s and Queen’s, and Jack Nicklaus, Golfer of the Century, who created the PGA Centenary Course (formerly named the Monarch’s).

The 2014 Ryder Cup matches will be played over The PGA Centenary Course the venue for both the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championships and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
